The Webby Awards

An interview with David-Michel Davies, Webby Executive Director

1) How have The Webby Awards evolved since they began in San Francisco 11 years ago?
For ten years, The Webby Awards have honored Websites, but this year we are expanding to honor three emerging categories on the Internet. The first area is the 15 new categories we've added honoring Interactive Advertising and Marketing.
The second is the Webby Mobile Awards, which honor web sites designed specifically for mobile devices.
The third is our new Webby Film & Video Awards. Just as the Oscars honor movies that premiere in theaters, and the Emmys honor what debuts on TV, The Webbys will be the first to honor film and video content that premieres and is especially created for the Internet.

2) What changes online led to the development of the new interactive advertising categories?
In the past two years, The Internet has matured from a small piece of the media planning budget to the premiere place to creatively market and advertise products, services, and information. Past Webby-nominated agencies such as Fallon (for BMW Films), Crispin Porter & Bogusky (for Subservient Chicken) and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners (for HP) have been creating original marketing campaigns that have really set the bar for what great interactive campaigns can achieve.
With Internet advertising breaking revenue records and redefining the media landscape, the timing was right for The Webby Awards to establish new categories recognizing the extraordinary range of innovation in the field.

3) How many new interactive advertising categories were added and what are they?
   There are 15 new categories:

Banner/Display Advertising Single
- Business-to-Business
- Business-to-Consumer
- Promotional
- Non-Profit/Educational
Rich Media Advertising Single
- Business-to-Business
- Business-to-Consumer
- Promotional
- Non-Profit/Educational
Additional Categories
- Viral Marketing
- Email Marketing
- Game or Application
- Branded Content
- Interactive Advertising
- Integrated Marketing

4) What makes the Webby Awards different from other ad industry awards, such as the Addy Awards and the Cannes Lions?
The Webby Awards is different because it gives agencies a chance to have their work recognized outside of their industry and to receive exposure major mainstream media like CNN and USA Today. With over 5,500 Website entries from around the globe, no other interactive award compares.
Webby Honorees are also recognized by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, a 550 -member body made up of a “who's who” of not just industry experts, but creative celebrities and luminaries, which has greatly expanded ths year to include award-winning advertising professionals and Hollywood Luminaries.

5) Who will be judging the interactive advertising categories?
75 industry leaders have been added to the Academy to judge the interactive advertising awards including: Robert Greenberg (R/GA), Jeff Benjamin (Crispin Porter + Bogusky), Kevin Flatt (Triball DDB), Joseph Crump (Avenue A/Razorfish) DavidEastman (Agency.com), Sasha Koren (Arnold Worldwide), Annie Wong (Ogilvy & Mather) and many more.
The entire list is available at http://www.iadas.net/membership.php

6) What are some of the more interesting trends you are noticing lately in the field of interactive advertising?
Video, Video, Video. Video advertising is growing significantly and it will be really exciting to see how online video advertising evolves since it can be so much more interactive than traditional television advertising.

7) What can nominees expect in terms of industry exposure and publicity?
The 10th Annual Webby Awards generated over 750 million media impressions in outlets from the BBC, CNN, and NBC News to the New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Sydney Morning Herald to Adweek, Hollywood Reporter and Wired magazines. The Webby Awards generate unparalleled PR and media exposure for its honorees.

8) How would it benefit our member agencies in the San Francisco area to participate in the Webby Awards?
- Winning a Webby Award validates superior work and gives clients and prospects the confidence they need to invest in your services.
- The Webby Awards is also a high profile way to recognize your employees for their accomplishments and a way to show your peers the cutting edge work being honored.
- Interactive media is an integrated part of a multi-channel strategy. Through the impartial third-party recognition that the Webby Awards provide, you can show that your efforts on the Web are working and contributing to your organization's overall goals.
